Hey folks,
*EDIT* got some of the math wrong. Fixed but still weird*
There's one part of spell crafting that I just can't quite figure out and I was wondering if any of you had some insight on this.
None of the calculators explain the % chance of item loss on an overcharge. I looked all over the internet and can't seem to find an answer to this question. Only thing I found was that people always said: "Don't overcharge until you hit 1k skill because the risk is to high."
So I got fed up and did my own experiment. I got a cheap 99% shield and made a bunch of 99% gems so that I could see what the chance of imbue success was for that item from 1 - 5 points overcharge. Just to be clear: the item and all gems are at 99% quality and this test was done in game and not on a calculator. Here were my findings:
1.5 OC - Chance of Success = 90% - Chance of item loss = 1% 2.5 OC - Chance of Success = 80% - Chance of item loss = 1% 3.5 OC - Chance of Success = 70% - Chance of item loss = 1% 4.5 OC - Chance of Success = 50% - Chance of item loss = 1% 5.5 OC - Chance of Success = 30% - Chance of item loss = 1%
First of all: this contradicts what I saw on Kort's. Kort's says the chance of success started at 70% and worked it's way down to 30%. Second: I was surprised that the chance of item loss never exceeded 1%.
So I have two questions: 1.) Does this seem right to you guys? 2.) If it is right, why don't people always shoot for 5.5 points OC? The risk seems well within reason.

Yes its ok. OC 5.5 cause its not needed. You cant 100% temp for all to have 5.5 OC

So this is what I've recently learned about SCing. Most of the credit goes to Bunni for the SC education. Going to post it here so I can refer to it later in case I forget =)
3 things can happen when you SC an item. 1. Success - Pretty self explanatory 2. Fail - No loss of items, just unsuccessful, simply try again 3. Boom! - Items and Gems go Boom, and are destroyed, as well as your face.
#1 and #2 are related. If you have an 80% chance of success, you have a 20% chance of fail. Your current skill level in Spellcrafting will determine your chance of success of the imbue. The higher your skill, the higher you chance of success.
#3 however is not the same. There is a math formula that will help you determine your chance of going BOOM. Just remember the magic number is 99.20%
The math formula is: (Item quality + Gem1 Quality + Gem2 Quality + Gem3 Quality + Gem4 Quality) / 5 = X X = the average quality of all 5 pieces.
100% - X = Y
Y = % chance to go BOOM
If X > or equal to 99.20% then 0% to go BOOM. If X = 99% then 1% to go BOOM If X = 98% then 2% to go BOOM and so on and so on.
examples: (100+99+99+99+99) / 5 = 99.2 (99+99+99+99=99) / 5 = 99
So.....
Long story short: If any 1 of the 4 gems is 100%, there will be 0% chance to go BOOM. If Item is MP and 4 99% gems, there will be 0% chance to go BOOM. If all 5 pieces are 99% there will be a 1% chance to go BOOM. etc. etc. Same math applies no matter how many points of Overcharge. If you're shooting for an MP Gem. Start crafting your highest level gems first. Once you get a 99% move to the next gem lower, and then then next lower. If you weren't lucky enough to get an MP yet then craft the lowest gem till you get an MP.
Important Note: From time to time you may find yourself only imbuing 1 gem into a piece of armor. e.g. Nightshade Envenom gloves or something like that. In this case the formula doesn't change, but instead the game assigns a quality of 94% when figuring in the gem2 gem3 and gem4. So the easy fix to this is to craft 99%'s the lowest level cheap gems to add to the item to ensure that it doesn't go boom.
